Dr. Holly S. Puritz, the first female physician to join The Group for Women, is both a beloved local doctor and a respected national voice on women’s health issues.

She earned a medical degree at Tufts University in Boston, Mass., before completing a special internship at the Medical College of Hampton Roads followed by an OB/GYN residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she was Chief Resident. Dr. Puritz is board certified and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

An integral part of The Group since 1987, Dr. Puritz is one of our managing partners and currently serves as president of the practice. She is also the Medical Director of OB/GYN Services at Sentara Leigh Hospital and chair for the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) in Virginia.

A powerful advocate for women’s and children’s access to healthcare, Dr. Puritz serves on the ACOG’s national Government Affairs Committee, as well as Virginia’s Health Commissioners Task Force for Infant Mortality and the Virginia Department of Health Immunization Advisory Committee.

Widely recognized for her expertise and patient-centered care, Dr. Puritz has been listed in Top Doctors in America, elected to the Consumer Research Council’s Guide to America’s Top OB/GYNs, and named one of the Top Doctors in Hampton Roads by Hampton Roads Magazine.

Above all, Dr. Puritz loves delivering babies and prizes the long-term relationships she develops with her patients – she’s even delivering the babies of “babies” she delivered years ago. “I count myself as extremely lucky,” she says. “After all these years I wake up in the morning and truly love to go to work.”

She and her husband, Dr. Steve Wohlgemuth, have a son and a daughter, both of whom have followed their parents into the health field.
